智能家居已逐漸普及，不少人都陸續為家添置智能設備，例如 Smart Speaker, IP Cam, 智能燈膽/電源開關, 門鎖, 不同的感應器等。市面上亦有很多裝置選擇，但就分了三大平台 Google, Amazon 和 Apple，選購智能設備時就要挑選支援相關平台才可。
Google 公佈會聯同 Amazon, Apple 和多間公司參與由 Zigbee Aliance 領導的工作組，共同開發製訂全新開放以 Internet Protocol 為基礎的的智能家居連接標準。
We’re joining Amazon, Apple and others to create Connected Home over IP, a new independent working group managed by the Zigbee Alliance (separate from the existing Zigbee 3.0/Pro protocol). Our goal is to bring together market-tested technologies to develop a new, open smart home connectivity standard based on Internet Protocol (IP).
當市場有統一的連接標準後，無論對產品開發或用家都可帶來裨益。設備或 Apps 開發商只需要跟從統一標準去開發，不再需要為不同平台製作不同版本，而用家選購智能家居設備亦會更簡單，產品不會再局限於單一平台上使用，可以應用在 Google, Amazon, Apple 或其他平台。將來應該可以用 Iphone Siri 連上 Amazon Echo 再使用 Google Nest Thermostat 控制家中冷氣呢。
